Abstract

Purpose: Health promoting behavior of young adults is closely related to their current and subsequent health status. The purpose of this study was to better understand the health promoting lifestyles profile of Korean university students in terms of differences between health department and non-health department.

Methods: The participants were 317 university students (161 health department, 156 non-health department) studying at a university in Korea. Data were collected from March 7 to April 4, 2008 using a questionnaires,

Results: There was no significant difference in total health promoting lifestyles profile score between health department students and non-health department students; the mean total health promoting lifestyles profile score of health department students was 2.43 (range 1-4) and those of non-health department students was 2.39. There was a significant mean difference in health responsibility (t=2.296, p=022) and nutrition (t=2.351, p = .019) by department. Subscales with the lowest means was health responsibility and exercise in both health department students and non-health department students.

Conclusion: Health promoting programs should be developed considering health responsibility and physical activity in particular.
